Visit... Dodgin's Yard, NE30
Strolling along the Fish Quay, something caught my eye: a new logo. I’d heard whispers about a new restaurant opening next door to the Quay Taphouse; turns out, those rumours were true... Clifford Anderson, the brains behind the Taphouse, has launched Dodgin’s Yard – the Fish Quay’s newest bar & grill.
Upon entering, you’ll be sure to receive the warmest of welcomes. My server was nothing but sympathetic, upon hearing of my recent jaw surgery, and hence my inability to sample any of the menu. (I'll be sure to go back once I can chew!). Instead, mam and I settled for a coffee and, once sat down, we noticed, and I mean truly noticed, the décor. Paying homage to their nautical roots, Dodgin’s Yard is all navy tiles, ship bulkhead lights and, to top it off, the logo features a sailboat fused with a chopping knife. So clever!
On offer at Dodgin’s Yard are an array of dishes, including the finest meats and mixed plates. Alongside their mouth-watering menu, Dodgin’s Yard also operate a fully-stocked bar, including a selection of beers, wines and cocktails. In a further nod to the rich history of the Quay, all of the cocktails are named after boats and tugs crafted by Dodgin's and Son shipbuilders, who occupied the space where Dodgin's Yard now stands, between 1871 and 1876.
"Dodgin's Yard is a totally separate venture to The Quay Taphouse," Cliff told me. "Although, the Fish Quay is the ideal site; it has a lovely community feel about it."
Situated on Bell Street, Dodgin's Yard is the Quay's latest addition - although it surely won't be the last. Upon writing this post, the OH and I received a letter from North Tyneside Council detailing the planned revamp of the former Rubber Factory and, as we speak, apartments are being built to the right of the Ferry Terminal.
So, what does Cliff think of the Fish Quay's regeneration?
"Long may it continue!" he enthuses, adding that everyone always pulls together on the Quay.
With its friendly atmosphere, I have no doubt that the community on the Quay, and beyond, will welcome Dodgin's Yard with open arms. There is ample space to dine, drink or simply to enjoy a coffee. Seats are equipped with plug sockets, for those of you who might want to take a laptop and get on with work. Alternatively, why not join some friends for a drink or two of an evening?
