Launching Great Northumberland 2018!

Hold onto your hats!

The time has come to launch Great Northumberland and, to celebrate, we’re inviting YOU to our fantastic launch event. Taking place at Hexham Abbey Grounds on Saturday 7 July, Great Northumberland’s exciting opener will kick start a summer-long programme of events across our great County!

The afternoon will begin with a vibrant, family-friendly programme of music and street theatre, plus a spectacular showcase event, which has been produced and created by outdoor arts aficionados, Walk the Plank.

“We’re really pleased to be part of the showcase launch for the Great Northumberland 2018 programme of events,” says Walk the Plank Producer, Billie Klinger. “Over the years, we’ve developed a rich portfolio of work across Northumberland and this event showcases our expertise in animating spaces with outdoor theatrics.”

Walk the Plank’s roving street theatre artists will be performing across the Abbey Grounds from 1pm onwards, in a captivating display of entertaining eccentricity. The street theatre artists will be joined by a full line-up of musical talent, who will showcase their sound in Hexham’s newly-restored bandstand.

From 2:45pm to 4pm, however, is when the excitement will step up a notch. Why? Because, lucky viewers will be treated to a special snapshot of the whole Great Northumberland programme! For the first time, representatives from each Great Northumberland event, will come together to showcase each of their spectacular events. Details will be animated via a giant screen and a map, highlighting the location of each show. So, if it’s happening in the Great Northumberland 2018 programme, you’ll see it first!

Fun for ALL of the Family

This ‘fun for all the family’ launch event will not only provide a snapshot of our wonderful programme of events but will give you the chance to enjoy an unforgettable afternoon – jam-packed with exciting things to see and do. Don’t forget that, after the events showcase, the street theatre and music will continue until 5pm.

Bring a Picnic

Why not make an afternoon of it and pack a picnic? We can’t guarantee sunshine, but we canguarantee an afternoon of family-friendly fun! The Sele is right next to Hexham Abbey and is perfect for pitching up with a picnic.

Why Not Leave the Car at Home?

To ensure you enjoy your day and get to the Abbey without delay, we encourage you to car share, walk, cycle or take public transport. Parking on-site is limited, so please bear this in mind when travelling to the Abbey.
